Competing in the lights of Vegas

Competing in the lights of Vegas

Las Vegas, the home for rodeo for two weeks of December. Now most of us are there to watch the NFR and the top 15 in the world. But others are there to compete as well. There are many events held over the course of two weeks that allow the competitors to show off their talents and become champions. There's the World Series Team roping, JR NFR, Rising Stars Calf Roping and so many others. But, there was a new addition this year, The Rope for The Crown Breakaway event.

Throughout the year ladies compete in their own associations and jackpots to secure a spot in the top 60 to compete for the title of the best breakaway roper in the country. This new event was put together by Jackie Crawford and all of her support. She wanted to help the sport of breakaway to continue to grow and take that next step up. The event was held at the newly built arena at The Plaza in downtown Las Vegas.

I was fortunate enough to secure a spot to this prestigious event and I can't tell you how fun it was. The atmosphere was amazing and so uplifting. Everyone was helping and cheering for all even if we have never met until this roping. Knowing that you are competing with such great ropers really made me want to step up my game and work even harder. It really felt like we roping for a world title.

The event kicked off with a prayer and the National Anthem and then three amazing rounds of roping to find out who would make it to the top fifteen for the short go. In the end our champion was Kelsie Chase. She roped excellent that day and really brought her A game

There was an added bonus to this roping though, they took the top 6 from the average and the top two from each round for a shoot out where the winner would get a Smarty Jr. In the end Nicole Baggerly was the winner and got to take home a great prize.

This event may have been new this year but I can tell you that next year it will be even bigger and better. Even though the dust has settled from this year Jackie is putting in long hours and working hard for next year. I am so excited to see where breakaway is headed.
